Hi,

I feel responsible for hassling about the blogging panels so if you can't find anyone more qualified to sit on any of those panels count me in. I would also be interested in the 'Levels 1 to 10' panel, though my qualifications in this area are severely antiquated.

I'd still like to see some panels on urban fantasy and paranormal romance. They are the two genres that are booming over in the states, and practically every major publisher is after them. Seems odd that they're not included, but gothic romance (a much harder sell) is.

But there's some great sounding panels there! (sign me up for the dead body one. It's always something I need to know more about :) )

I called Rydges last week to book and they told me they have yet to confirm the convention rate for Conflux. The normal rate was in excess of $220, so I am hanging out for the discount, but at the same time am acutely aware of your comments that it is a busy time in Canberra. Any idea when everything will be confirmed and ready for booking?

Yep, you're right (although I wouldn't classify EagleHawk as in Canberra, more like 20 minutes drive out on the road to Sydney). But yes, the con is at Rydges Lakeside.

I have looked at this entry several times now and somthing has just clicked. I assume the Rydges in question is Lakeside, like last year. I just thought it prudent to confirm as I believe there are three Rydges hotels in Canberra!

Rob Hood is organising the film festival this year, I'll pass on your thoughts to him. It won't necessarily be the same as last year, as Rob obviously has different thoughts and ideas to Michael.

Sorry to disappoint you, but we're not at the NMA this year, so we won't have access to their terrific facilities. The entire con will be based at Rydges Lakeside and we're looking at the technology we need to showcase the films as best we can. However, we will be having the dealers room, I'll send you the dealers information.

The entire con will be based at Rydges Lakeside and we’re looking at the technology we need to showcase the films as best we can. However, we will be having the dealers room, I’ll send you the dealers information.

That's a shame, Mike did a good job last year. I assume that the same arrangement will be in force for fan films of copyrighted material as last year, that they can be shown as exhibition films?

As candidates for showing in the cinama, if the ground-work of permissions is to your satisfaction, I could get a half-dozen Star Trek fan films although I would go for the most notable - ST: New Voyages, ST: Hidden Frontier, Starship Exeter and ST: Of Gods and Men

In addition, Star Wreck has a new "Imperial" version that is not only covered by a creative commons but is being sold for profit in Scandinavia - Samuli and co have already said they would be pleased to have their film shown again.

I also have a lead on showing "Pitching Lucas" which won the critics and people's choice at the last official Star Wars awards and possibly an online chat with the producer Shane Felux.

I am hoping to run a combined Star Trek table in the Dealers Room (Sci Fi Studios, TrekUnited, USS Southern Cross and friends) where we will be showing every Trek fan film currently available on a loop, plus (assuming internet availability) online chats with the producers and other Star Trek related exhibits.

I was amazed at the facilities at the NMA last year, the cinema is awesome and the dealers room looked like the right place for us to exhibit!

Cheers

Hi Keri

As a writer of paranormal romance myself, I'm right with you on that one. I'm sure there'll be quite a bit of talk about dark fantasy and horror, as this is where guests Graham Joyce and Kaaron Warren shine. If you've got ideas for particular things to talk about, then let me know :)

Hi Kirok

We don't have a Media chair as we're not having a full media stream. However, if you want to pass on any information or thoughts for great media panels to me, I'll make sure they're considered.

Film Festival? Excellent! I was hoping the media stream would continue. Could the Media chair contact me, please? There have been significant changes in the situation as regards CBS/Paramount and Star Trek fan films in the States over the last year.

Cheers

As an Aussie who writes dark urban fantasy, I'd love to have this market and the paranormal romance market talked about more here in Oz. They're both huge in America, and there's currently a number of Australians and New Zealanders doing big business over there in both genres

If anyone wants to follow the testing and not have to hunt for the posts, I try to remember to collect them here: http://www.foodpast.com/category/recipe-tests/

And there will be more recipes for testing floating round for the next few months, so feel free to contact me if you want to try cooking something just a bit different.

That's a great idea, and something close to my heart, as I do romance based fantasy and sci fi. So consider it noted.

Another thought. How about something to do with cross-genre pollination, the mixing of crime/mystery elements and spec fic, or romance and spec fic. The challenges of writing that, and reaching across audience boundaries.

Hi Karen and Andrew

Some great ideas there. We've got a workshop on characterisation, being done by Kaaren Sutcliffe, but it's definitely something to do a panel on too. And I think bringing the other writing disciplines in as well is a brilliant idea.

I definitely want a lot of horror/dark fantasy in there, particularly since two of our guests are from that realm of things (Graham Joyce and Kaaron Warren). So I'll definitely get in touch with the AHWA, thanks for the suggestion, Andrew!

I'd like to see/be involved with another panel on the rise of the Webzine format for SpecFic. I though the one last year went really well but could have examined areas more related to getting published (geared to writers) in the area than the different models used to set up a webzine (rather than geared to publishers).

I'd like to see the AHWA be involved in programming with a nice stream for Horror/Dark Fantasy, especially with all the things going on in this genre in Australia at the moment.

How about a panel featuring a range of specialist spec fic booksellers? They are the real interface between writers and readers, and often have the clearest idea of what it is the reading public is really after.

Also, a panel on how other writing disciplines (script writing, playwriting, poetry, journalism/non-fiction) can help a novelist improve their work/technique?

What makes a character memorable, and how do you create one?

Is there really a gender difference in writing? Do men and women write differently, and can they ever create a realistic character of the opposite sex?
