And Conflux begins

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

The con started for me today, when I picked up the wonderful Graham Joyce. Honestly, I’m already in love :) Graham and I went and had coffee and a bit of a drive around Canberra before he went back to the hotel to collapse (fair enough considering he’d just spent more than 24 hours travelling).

Graham’s a very easy to chat to person - has a great understanding and love of cons, so he’s more than ready to get involved and party on. So those of you coming to Conflux are sure to have a great time with Graham.

In terms of the convetion all is done, apart from the odd little tweak here and there. I actually had the time to take a nap this afternoon - thank goodness, I was absolutely exhausted.

Tomorrow, more guests arrive - Kaaron Warren, Simon Brown and Jonathan Strahan. We have the first official event - a dinner at the yacht club. The final guests - Garth Nix, Kevin J Anderson and Rebecca Moesta - arrive Friday morning. By then, we’ll be well and truly off and running.

It’s very exciting - I’m sure everyone’s going to have a great time. If you haven’t seen the timetable yet, go to www.conflux.org.au/2007/programme.shtml There’s been a couple of small adjustments since then, but overall you can see how cool it’s going to be.

Go Conflux!

Presentation cancellation

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

Unfortuantely, James Sheridan will no longer be able to present his virtual zen garden on Sunday morning at Conflux. Hopefully, James will be in a position to show his work at future conventions.

Panel cancellation

Monday, September 24th, 2007

Unfortunately, we’ve had to cancel the Beasts of Burden panel, which was to take place on Monday afternoon. If you’re interested in horses in literature, check out Maxine McArthur’s workshop on Friday afternoon.

Calling panel participants

Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

We have some panels that are a little short of participants. They’ll still run, but more voices and opinions would be great. If any of them interest you, email chair@conflux.org.au Note that Conflux is limiting people to a total of four panels, in order to ensure a multitude of opinions and voices are heard.

  • Beach balls and strobes - cheap but effective special effects.
  • Moving on from mobiles - where to next for technology?
  • Levels 1 to 10 - the role of gaming in developing the genre
  • Scrolling through the story - past, present and future of webpublishing
  • Urban versus paranormal - which romance is which?
  • Telling the future - how divination really works.

Programming

Monday, September 10th, 2007

We’ve started sending out panel invitations. If you’re coming to Conflux and you haven’t heard from us yet, or if you’re coming but we don’t know it yet, then email chair@conflux.org.au so we can see where we can fit you in.

Charity auction

Saturday, September 8th, 2007

Conflux 4 will be holding a charity auction during the convention. Any donations are gratefully recieved. You can leave them at the registration desk, or if you aren’t going to be at the con, mail them to P.O. Box 903, Belconnen ACT 2616 and email chair@conflux.org.au to let us know they’re coming so we can keep an eye for it.

Less than a month to go

Saturday, September 1st, 2007

This time in four weeks, we’ll be sitting down to the first course of the regency gothic banquet. It’s amazing how fast things are happening.

In the past couple of weeks, the souvenir book has been finalised, tshirts have been printed and bookings have started coming in for the workshops.

Next weekend, the timetable for the convention will be available and members who said they were interested in being involved with panels will be told what they’re doing. In other words, its getting close and we’re getting pretty organised.

If you know you’re going to be at the convention, but you haven’t got your membership yet, let me know at chair@conflux.org.au so I can consider you for panels as well.  And if you want to come to regency gothic banquet, make sure you book your tickets - bookings close Sunday September 23.
